• The West Orange Visual Arts Program provides a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum that nurtures creativity, technical skill, and self-expression at every grade level. From early exploration in elementary school to advanced portfolio development in high school, our program is built around the elements and principles of design and aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Visual and Performing Arts.

    Elementary School (Grades PreK-5)

    Elementary Art Curriculum

Our elementary art program uses a discipline-based approach to help students grow in perceptual awareness, creative thinking, and appreciation for the role of art in society. Each grade level builds foundational skills through hands-on exploration of a wide variety of materials and techniques:

    • Units in drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, and ceramics
    • Emphasis on the elements and principles of design (line, shape, color, texture, form, space, etc.)
    • Integration of art production, history, criticism, and aesthetics
    • Culturally diverse content and examples from well-known artists
    • Opportunities for creative problem-solving, group discussions, and self-expression

    Middle School (Grades 6-8)

    Middle School Art Curriculum

Middle school students expand their skills and creative thinking through five focused visual arts units that combine technical instruction with artistic exploration. The program encourages students to experiment, reflect, and build confidence in their artistic voice.

    Units of Study:

    • Drawing
    • Color/Painting
    • Ceramics
    • Sculpture
    • Mixed Media
