Mathematics

  • The West Orange Math Department is dedicated to the effective implementation of teaching and learning so that all students will be successful with grade-level math skills and concepts and will develop and transfer their proficiency with mathematics to problem-solve, work with precision, act as critical thinkers, and use skills of reasoning and justification with accuracy and efficiency.

We support a curriculum that is aligned to the focus, rigor and coherence of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics, inclusive of research and evidence-based instructional strategies such as those identified by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Our K-12 Math program is designed to be student-centered, and incorporates frameworks to engage students, differentiate instruction, and build math and academic vocabulary skills throughout a student’s elementary and secondary education. Students learn to utilize appropriate math tools to explore and understand math, from graphic organizers and manipulatives to calculators, computers, and software. These resources promote mathematical modeling, problem solving, simulation, graphing, and geometric constructions.

At the high school level, the program includes college preparatory courses, AP courses, as well as courses designed to emphasize skills necessary for success in our complex society.

For further work in mathematics, and in many other areas from business to sociology, from biology to engineering, the ability to apply mathematics skills with understanding is essential. It is important for students to plan their mathematics program carefully in order to have opportunities to improve their skills and to keep their options open regarding career possibilities.

    Our math programs include:

    • K-8:  iReady Classroom Mathematics and Diagnostic*
    • 9-12: Delta Math*
    • McGraw Hill Curricular resources
    • College Board AP Course Outlines

*Resources provide actionable data to measure student growth and proficiency
