Mathematics

  • The mathematics curriculum is designed to help students achieve functional mathematical skills. The program includes college preparatory courses as well as courses designed to emphasize skills necessary for success in our complex society. Mathematics courses emphasize an understanding of ideas and concepts as students develop accuracy and confidence in skills and problem-solving situations. The curriculum is aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

    For further work in mathematics, and in many other areas from business to sociology, from biology to engineering, the ability to apply mathematics skills with understanding is essential. It is important for students to plan their mathematics program carefully in order to have opportunities to improve their skills and to keep their options open regarding career possibilities.

    The mathematics program employs a "spiral" plan to help reinforce the mathematics learned in each course and to review key skills and concepts. Where appropriate, mathematics courses include preparation for the New Jersey State Testing Program (HSPA) and the PSAT/SAT.

    Calculators and computers are important components of the overall mathematics program. In all mathematics courses, students will use scientific calculators to enhance the problem-solving focus. Graphing calculators are used to a moderate extent in some mathematics courses and extensively in other courses. Computer software packages are used to enhance specific topics within various mathematics courses. Computer applications include problem solving, simulation, graphing, and geometric constructions.
