Celebrating Excellence in Theatre: WOHS Thespians Shine at NJ Thespian Festival
Matthew Stillman | 01.20.2025
West Orange High School's Thespian Society seniors, Ri Ri and Makayla Arjoon, have achieved an outstanding feat at the NJ Thespian Festival by clinching a Superior Award in Acting Pairs. This prestigious accolade qualifies them to advance to Nationals this summer, representing WOHS with remarkable talent and dedication.
Under the guidance of Ms. Mapes in the Honors Advanced Theatre class, WOHS showcased their prowess at the Chapter Select competition with the gripping play 'The Shape of the Grave' by Laura Lundgren Smith. Directed by seniors Abby Rothstein, Karissa Rivers, and Jacob Schulman, and featuring junior Amelie Swayze in the lead role of Colleen, the production delved into the complex narrative of a Northern Irish teen who joins the IRA in pursuit of purpose and Irish independence.
The entire WOHS Troupe 1530 Thespian Society displayed exceptional versatility and skill, competing across various categories including songs, monologues, scenes, dances, and costume designs. Their collective effort and passion underscored their commitment to the art of theatre and represented WOHS with pride on a statewide platform.
The International Thespian Society (ITS), as the sole theatre honor society for middle and high school students in the United States, honors and elevates student achievement in theatre arts. Affiliation with ITS not only brings distinction to students and theatre programs but also opens doors to national recognition and invaluable resources. ITS celebrates students' achievements in both performance and production, fostering a community where creativity and dedication thrive.
Congratulations to the WOHS Thespian Society for their outstanding performances and achievements at the NJ Thespian Festival, embodying the spirit of excellence and passion in theatre arts at West Orange High School.
