The West Orange High School Marching Mountaineers have cemented their place as champions, clinching back-to-back state titles and capturing hearts with their jaw-dropping performances. But the magic fans witness on the field is no accident—it’s the product of intense preparation and a key element known as “the drill.”
What is “The Drill”?
The drill is the intricate series of steps and positions that form the backbone of each Marching Mountaineer performance. It transforms music into a visual masterpiece, ensuring every member moves in sync to create stunning patterns and designs on the field. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, learning the drill fosters discipline, teamwork, and precision among the band members—essential qualities for their success.
Starting in the second week of August—before the first school bell even rings—students begin learning the drill, dedicating hours to mastering each movement. By mid-September, the full show is set, but the work doesn’t stop there. The band refines and perfects their performance throughout the season, culminating in November with championship-level precision.
A Visionary Drill Designer: Jeff Sacktig
Behind the brilliance of the Marching Mountaineers’ drill is Jeff Sacktig, one of the most respected figures in the marching arts. A 2015 Drum Corps International Hall of Fame inductee and 2024 Winter Guard International Hall of Fame honoree, Sacktig is renowned for his ability to turn music into motion.
As the current drill writer for Carolina Crown, one of the elite corps in Drum Corps International, Sacktig brings unparalleled expertise to the Marching Mountaineers. His designs challenge the students to push their limits and grow as performers, resulting in shows that are both artistically captivating and technically flawless.
Capturing Excellence: The “Gears of Time” Performance
The Mountaineers’ 2024 state championship performance, titled “Gears of Time,” is a testament to the power of drill. With the help of Associate Band Director Erin Lagatic, the band’s performance was matched against the original animation of Sacktig’s drill using the Mountaineer Skycam. The comparison revealed just how flawlessly the students brought his vision to life—a remarkable achievement that underscores their dedication and skill.
