West Orange, NJ (March 15, 2023) - The West Orange Scholarship Fund is proud to announce their 100th year of operation, and to celebrate, they have refreshed their logo with a brand new design after hosting a contest for students to submit designs for their new logo.
20+ students from West Orange High School submitted designs based on a rubric provided by the organization. The designs had to keep the flaming torch of educational enlightenment central to the re-design. All other elements from the original logo design were up for re-imagination. An independent subcommittee of trustees evaluated each submission, which was stripped of student identifiers or names prior to the deliberation process. The final selection was as much of a reveal to the committee as it was to the students.
The committee was impressed by the high quality of the submissions and felt that the designs were so good that they decided to award two scholarships. The runner-up, James Der ('24), will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of his choice upon graduation. The winner, Mason Bashkoff ('23), will receive a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of his choice upon graduation.
"We are thrilled to celebrate our 100th year with a fresh new logo, and we couldn't have done it without the talent and creativity of our local students," said Richard Rizzolo, President of the West Orange Scholarship Fund.
“Mason's logo design was exceptional, as he effectively used the high school colors of light blue and dark blue to create an elegant and commanding logo that incorporated a phoenix within the center of the flame, a symbol of transformation, rebirth, and regeneration, which the organization admired.” said Tynia Thomassie, Secretary of the West Orange Scholarship Fund.
The West Orange Scholarship Fund has been helping to make higher education more accessible to deserving students in the West Orange community for over 100 years. To date, the Fund has awarded over $1,600,000 in cumulative scholarships, and continues to support students as they pursue their academic and professional goals.

Established in 1923 by a group of dedicated West Orange citizens, the West Orange Scholarship Fund was founded with the purpose of providing financial assistance to deserving graduates in the West Orange community who might otherwise be unable to pursue their education. The Fund receives income from three primary sources: its permanent endowment, generous contributions from the community during the Trustees Annual Appeal, and funds raised by the West Orange Council of PTAs.
