New Boys Volleyball Team Serves Up School History With First Game and Win
WEST ORANGE, NJ - In another season of athletic firsts, the West Orange High School Boys Volleyball team played their first-ever game and took their first win against Westside, 2-0 (25-23, 25-20).
"This was the first game of the season and program history," said Head Coach Jackie Cruz. Cruz is also the Head Coach of the champion Girls Volleyball team.
"Sophomore Captain Justin Reid assisted Senior Keon Nelson for the kill to end the match," she continued, " and Junior Captain Jackson Edwards finished with 6 kills, 2 blocks, 10 digs, and 2 aces. Justin Reid completes the match with 14 assists, 7 digs, and 1 ace."
Students approached the Board of Education in 2018 petitioning for a Boys Volleyball team. With the enthusiasm and interest among the high school students, the team was formed and is now beginnings its first competetive season. Girls Lacrosse and Fencing are also new sports in West Orange.
"Overall, our first win was a team win. These gentlemen have been doing a great job day in and day out; working extremely hard, being dedicated, and trusting/believing in the coaches and in each other," noted Cruz.
The Boys Volleyball team has their first home game against North Star on April 3 beginning at 4:00 pm, and another home game against Eagle Academy on April 5 beginning at 4:00 pm.
