West Orange Girls Soccer Wins First-Ever Essex County Tournament Championship
WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School Girls Soccer team made school history on Oct. 26 with their first-ever Essex County Tournament championship in a 2-1 overtime win against Glen Ridge at James Caldwell High School.
Emma Mitchell scored off a pass from Hannah Villasin in the first half for a 1-0 halftime lead, but Glen Ridge's Anna Prussak scored halfway through the second half to tie the score.
"In the second half Glen Ridge was attacking and scored a great goal on a set piece to tie the game 1-1. Both sides fought extremely hard and the game went to overtime," continued DeVore.
Top-seed West Orange fought to keep Glen Ridge at bay. West Orange dominated the action on the pitch throughout the game, getting off 18 shots and keeping Glen Ridge to one shot on goal throughout the game. Nyah Harper, Mya Bembry, Kiara Machuca and Tori Rideau-Winds kept their opponents from attacking on the back end.
"Kiley Capstraw had a long throw that Nyah Harper headed in in the first OT to win the county championship," explained DeVore.
"All of the coaches are very proud of all of the girls. They have worked so hard for this and it was well-deserved," DeVore praised.
"As always, the support of the parents, fans and student body was fantastic, and it was a great moment the girls will remember forever...it reminds us how special high school sports are," DeVore concluded.
