• West Orange High School Library Media Center Rules and Policies

    Entry and Expectations

The LMC serves as a communal space for research, reading, creating, and other academic activities. In order to ensure that everyone enjoys the privilege of working and studying in a pleasant environment, visitors must follow West Orange High School’s guidelines for appropriate behavior as outlined in the Student Handbook. Additionally, food and drink are not permitted in the LMC.

Upon entering the LMC, students must scan their West Orange High School ID to log their visit. Please note that LMC capacity may be limited due to class use and computer availability.

    LMC Hours

The LMC is open from 6:50am until 3:30pm Monday through Thursday, and from 6:50am until 2:15pm on Friday. After school hours may vary throughout the year due to faculty obligations and scheduling shifts.

Students must present a pass from their teacher to complete work in the LMC during a class or study hall. Passes aren’t required during lunch.

    After School Entry

Students who wish to visit the LMC after school (without a pass) must scan in by 2:35pm. Students entering the LMC after 2:35pm must present a hall pass and a late bus pass from the sending staff member before scanning in.

Students are expected to remain in the LMC until dismissal. At dismissal, late bus passes will be issued if available.

    Lending Policy

Borrowers must present their ID card to check out library materials. Borrowers are responsible for the prompt return of all items charged to their account.

    Circulation Periods

    • Books in the general collection circulate for 28 days. Books can be renewed once either in the LMC or online via the Destiny OPAC.

    • Reference books and current magazines circulate for 14 days.

    • DVDs circulate for one week. DVDs can be renewed once either in the LMC or online via the Destiny OPAC.

    • Kindles circulate for 28 days. Students who wish to borrow a Kindle must first complete a permission slip. Permission slips are available online and in the LMC.

    Circulation Limits

    • Borrowers may check out up to ten (10) items total. Additional loans are permitted at a librarian’s discretion.

    • Borrowers who owe overdue library materials are limited to five (5) items until outstanding loans are returned.

    Fines for Overdue Items

Since the LMC eschews punitive fines and fees, we do not charge borrowers for overdue materials. Levied fees are solely intended to maintain the integrity of the collection in the event of damage or loss.

    Lost or Damaged Materials

If an item is lost or damaged, the borrower is responsible for its replacement cost as recorded in the library catalog. Payments can be made through the district's ePayment portal via credit or debit card. If a lost item is recovered, the borrower will be refunded.

If you have any questions about lost or damaged materials, please see Mrs. Binns or Mr. Thompson.
