WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School Theater Department will perform their Fall Play, "The Laramie Project," on November 12-13 in the auditorium, 51 Conforti Avenue, beginning at 7:00 pm.

On October 6, 1998, 21-year-old University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard was tied to a fence post, robbed, beaten, tortured, and left to die. He was discovered 18 hours later clinging to life but died five days later after being kept on life support. He was killed because he was gay. Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were subsequently arrested, convicted in 1999, with both currently serving two consecutive life terms.

Moises Kaufman, founder of the Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, traveled to Laramie, Wyoming following the murder with the goal of interviewing the community as they grappled with the emotional aftermath. During their 18-month stay, the team interviewed over 200 residents, including those related to the crime. From this, "The Laramie Project" was born.

The play explores difficult themes, including hatred, compassion, and prejudice simmering just below the surface of a seemingly average community.

Tickets are $15 and go on sale online on Nov. 1 here. Some tickets may be available at the door. Ticket sales are limited and theatergoers must wear masks.
