West Orange Chinese Students Celebrate Chinese New Year at Library
WEST ORANGE, NJ - Students in the West Orange High School Chinese Honor Society and Chinese Club celebrated the Chinese New Year at the West Orange Public Library on Feb. 3. The Lunar New Year 2019 is The Year of the Pig.
The students entertained families with several activities highlighting Chinese culture, such as calligraphy writing of the New Year symbol of good fortune and other well wishes themed arts and crafts, face painting, and a performance by students of a traditional Chinese story about friendship and acceptance entitled "The Three Butterflies." Students wrote a script from the story, made props, and spoke in both English and Chinese.
Chinese teachers Yajing Li and Yun Abernathy helped students at the event, and World Languages Supervisor Felix Plata stopped by to enjoy the afternoon. Visitors received New Year gifts and prizes.
