Welcome to my webpage! I am Tony Edelstein, and I am in my 15th year of teaching. This year I am co-teaching the following courses: U.S. History 1, English 11, and History of Race, Class, Gender & Ethnicity. I am also the faculty advisor for the Mock Trial team, which I encourage your son/daughter to explore. Prior to teaching, I worked for 18 years as an attorney in New York City for a public interest organization.
My wife and I have lived in West Orange for 26 years, and our two children attended the West Orange public schools from kindergarten through high school.
My practice is to communicate throughout the year to advise you of your child's progress and of assignments, quizzes, and tests. In high school, there is the expectation that students will take responsibility for their own learning and realize that their actions and choices have consequences. In order to be successful, students have to want to succeed and understand that they must put forth significant and sustained effort. Teachers do not give grades - the students earn the grades they get.
Towards that end, I highly recommend that your son/daughter develop a system for recording assignments, due dates, etc., either in their phone's calendar or in an agenda book/date planner. The students must develop the habit of using their chosen system diligently for every class and checking it every day.
Also, you can see your son/daughter's grades online at any time through the West Orange Parent Portal. I strongly encourage you and your child to check it regularly. If you have not already received a password for the Parent Portal, please contact your son/daughter's guidance counselor.
In my classes, we use Google Classroom. If you would like to receive a weekly or daily summary of assignments, please email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) so that I can invite you to join Google Classroom. All of my assignments are available via that portal. There is also a free Google Classroom App that can be downloaded on your student's phone to access Google Classroom as well. The App will notify students when an assignment or message is posted.
I look forward to working with your sons and daughters and communicating with you throughout the year.
