About the West Orange High School Band Program
The Visual and Performing Arts Department at West Orange High School offers a comprehensive selection of courses in the areas of band, choir, orchestra, theatre, dance, and music theory.
The band program at West Orange High School serves more than 225 students with four tiered ensembles. The Ninth Grade Band is serves as an introductory course that provides students with the fundamentals needed to excel in the other curricular ensembles.
Concert Band is the third of four ensembles at West Orange High School. Students in Concert Band are in grades 10-12 and are primarily working on developing technique and musicianship through grade-appropriate literature.
Symphonic Winds is the second of four ensembles at West Orange High School. Students in Symphonic Winds are in grades 10-12. In 2016 Symphonic Winds premiered the piece Unison Music composed by Dr. Payton MacDonald, Assistant Professor of Music at William Paterson University. In 2017, Symphonic Winds was invited to the Metropolitan Wind Band Festival Invitational sponsored by Music for All for the first time.
Wind Ensemble is the premiere performing group at West Orange High School. Each member receives honors credit for participating in a chamber music group that performs at various holidays and civic engagements. The Wind Ensemble has had the opportunity to perform at many prestigious events, including the Mid-Atlantic Honors Wind Band Festival at Rutgers University, the Metropolitan Wind Band Invitational at Roxbury High School and the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Wind Ensemble is proud to represent Region I in the State Gala Concert for ten consecutive years.
Students in the Wind Ensemble are placed into a small chamber group where they learn and perform chamber music in both our school and community. The other three ensembles have like-instrument lessons on a rotating basis during class time.
Additionally, students can participate in the Marching Mountaineers, three jazz ensembles, two winter color guards, pit orchestra, and percussion ensemble.
We are proud of our offerings at West Orange High School and encourage all students to get involved!
