Arbor Day Celebrated at Redwood Elementary School

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Arbor Day was celebrated on April 27 at Redwood Elementary School with the planting of five new trees around its perimeter and a visit from Mayor McCartney and members of the Environmental and Open Space Commissions.

Township forester Walter Kipp selected two maple trees and three redbud trees; the maples were located where they would have plenty of room to grow and the redbuds, which grow to about 20 feet, were placed where other trees were closer. The trees were planted in the rear of the school at Forest Avenue and Ellis Street.

Mayor Susan McCartney and Chair of the Environmental Commission Mike Brick were on hand for the celebration, which is held annually in West Orange at an elementary school. Kipp said that he would like to plant at least five trees a year for Arbor Day.

"West Orange has long been a Tree City, USA and holds a Bronze certification in sustainability," said McCartney.

"We would love to see many more trees planted here in West Orange, not only by the township, but by our community," she added.
