Kelly Elementary Brings Salsa Dancing to School

WEST ORANGE, NJ - As part of Kelly Elementary School's Hispanic Heritage Month programming, salsa dancing came to school on Oct. 10.

Organized by the Kelly PTA, the first hour of the community-friendly event featured instruction on various Hispanic dances for families, including salsa, cha-cha, and more. The second hour was spent dancing to popular and classic Hispanic music, provided by DJ Jose Rojas. The gym was decorated to reflect various Hispanic countries and snacks were available.

Dance and music are perhaps two of the best-known components of Hispanic culture. The diversity of the dances, with origins in American, African, European, and indigenous (Amerindian) roots, is known worldwide. The traditions of Hispanic dance in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean are as diverse as Hispanic culture itself. Dance is more than entertainment; it reflects their history, traditions, and identities.
