West Orange High School Junior Receives Summer Scholarship to Governor's School Program
WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School junior Robeson Bennett has been accepted to the prestigious Governor's School for Engineering and Technology, to be held in July at Rutgers University School of Engineering in New Brunswick. Bennett was nominated by WOHS and fewer than 100 students are admitted to the program at no cost to their families.
According to the Governor's School website: "Students will have the opportunity to collaborate on a novel research project which will be showcased in a conference-style final paper and presentation during a culminating research symposium. The program also includes workshops, site visits to local corporations, and activities with professors, professionals, and peers from throughout the state."
The program runs throughout July and ends with a research symposium highlighting the students' work on the last day. Parents, teachers, and friends are encouraged to attend in addition to the corporate sponsors, professors, and guests.
In 2023, Bennett attended Cornell University's Catalyst Program, participating in ten field sessions across Cornell's engineering majors and joining with a diverse group of minds "including those from backgrounds historically excluded from and underrepresented in STEM fields."
Bennett founded the National Society of Black Engineers at West Orange High School and is considering colleges like Cornell, Brown, and Lehigh University upon graduation in 2025, where he plans to major in Environmental and Civil Engineering.
