Students, Athletes and Programs Recognized at June Board of Education Meetings
WEST ORANGE, NJ – The June 12 and 26 Board of Education meetings took time to recognize outstanding students, athletes and programs in the West Orange School District.
June 8 Recognition
On June 8, Gregory Elementary School presented the successful District-Wide Fitness Combine Initiative that took place in all 11 West Orange Schools.
Fifth-grade students demonstrated activities in the combine that continues to foster West Orange Public Schools' partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and their innovative "Fuel Up to Play 60" health and fitness program.

The West Orange High School Boys Tennis Team was recognized for their 2017 Colonial Division Championship, ending the season with a perfect 8-0 record in division play and 13-6 overall.

Victor Lopez was recognized for breaking the WOHS Wrestling record, ending his high school career with 136 wins and in the top 16 in the state of New Jersey.

Andrew DiPalma broke the WOHS Lacrosse goal record of 106 goals set by Alex Berman in 2010. DiPalma ended his high school career with 124 career goals and 73 assists and 197 total points. He will continue his Lacrosse Career at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

The WOHS Jr. AFROTC was recognized for a successful year that included top scores for their inspection by the Department of Defense, being named the top Jr. ROTC unit in the state of New Jersey, and the recognition of Maj. Joseph Marchesini and Chief Ricardo Thurston as top instructors nationwide, and for Maj. Marchesini, worldwide.
Second year cadets Ayana Tapper and Aamore Richards received special recognition for receiving the AFJROTC Silver Valor Award for heroism. Earlier this year they helped save the life of a child dangling out of a second-story window. This award is the second highest award an AFJROTC cadet can receive.

On June 26 rising West Orange High School senior Anna Favetta was recognized for representing the state of New Jersey at the annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference, June 17-22 in Washington, D.C. This is the first time a WOHS student has represented NJ at the conference.
