West Orange High School Girls Wrestling Takes Second at Northern Regional Tournament; Guerrero, Opara Heading to Atlantic City

WEST ORANGE, NJ - In another exciting day for West Orange High School wrestling, the Girls team took second at the North Region Tournament on Feb. 23 and will send two seniors to Atlantic City.

"It was a great day full of some worthy accomplishments for our program," said Wrestling Coach Steve Zichella.

Seniors Sandy Guerrero (215 lbs.) and Precious Opara (151 lbs.) won the championship in their respective weight classes. They will represent the team in the NJSIAA Individual State Wrestling Championships to be held in Atlantic City at the BoardWalk Hall Arena from March 5-7.

The team took second place overall behind High Point in a field that represents 172 schools (sans the schools that do not have Girls Wrestling teams.) West Orange had the largest complement of female wrestlers (13) and competed in each of the 11 weight classes.

Although only the top three wrestlers advance to the Individual Championships, Senior Daniela Tacuri (114 lbs) placed fourth, Sophomore Esther Gratia (161 lbs) finished sixth, and Junior Jessica Welcome (143 lbs) was seventh.

"We are so proud of the girls," noted Zichella. "We are West Orange!"
