West Orange High School Girls Basketball Celebrates Women in Sports Day, Takes Win Over Newark Tech 63-44
WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School Girls Basketball Team recognized Women in Sports Day on Feb. 13 and took a decisive win over Newark Tech, 63-44.
Coach Doug Nevins recognized the 32nd anniversary of Title IX celebrating women and girls in sports.
“With tonight’s event, West Orange High School, administrators, coaches, and the girls’ basketball program are doing our part to celebrate, recognize, and applaud girls’ amazing achievements and encourage girls to participate in sports,” said Nevins.
West Orange High School Girls Basketball Head Coach Caniece Williams was named the 2018 Trailblazer of the Year at the high school. In addition to coaching, Williams is a math teacher.
Junior Mya Bembry was top scorer for West Orange, netting 23 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks. Senior Nathali Simpson followed with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals.
During halftime, elementary and middle school athletes from Verona and West Orange shot hoops.
The game belonged to the Mountaineers from the beginning. An ongoing series of fouls on the part of Newark Tech provided several opportunities for West Orange to add points to their lead. Mariah Perez scored 19 points for Newark Tech.
“I’m just so proud of the girls,” said Williams.
“Nathali really played hard,” she continued.
“You always hear about Newark Tech in the news, but not West Orange,” she stated. “This game put West Orange on the map.”
West Orange is now 15-6 and will play Saddle River Day at home on Feb. 15.
