West Orange Boys Soccer Captures NJSIAA North 1, Group 4 Sectional Title
WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School Boys Soccer team captured the NJSIAA North 1, Group 4 championship on Nov. 5, defeating Clifton 2-1. The Mountaineers last won a state sectional title in 2015.
"This is our 12th final and 7th sectional championship in the last 20 years," began Head Coach Doug Nevins.
No. 2 West Orange knew going in that the road would not be easy versus No. 1 Clifton, who had only given up eight goals throughout the season and none - so far - in the tournament. In fact, Clifton had possession of the ball for most of the game. But coming off a strong defeat against Kearny, the battle-seasoned Mountaineers were in it to win it. West Orange's first goal towards the end of the first half was a corner kick from Jack Dvorin to Mason Bashkoff.
Clifton responded early in the second half with a goal by Vitali Datsyk. When another opportunity came for Datsyk to score, WOHS midfielder Lucas Andrada intercepted and passed it to Dvorin for the game-winning goal.
"The team was amazing," Nevins continued.
"They defended so well and were so composed throughout the game. Mason scored a great first goal and after we let them tie it up, we didn't panic. Our second goal was the product of a great run by Lucas Andrada and a calm finish by Jack Dvorin. Goalkeeper Justin Scavalla was was amazing as always," he said.
The Mountaineers will take on Westfield in the NJSIAA Group Tournament, Semifinal Round, Group 4 on Nov. 9, time and place TBD.
