West Orange Girls Basketball Shoots Out of the Gate with 5-0 Streak
WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School Girls Basketball team wasted no time in establishing their American Division presence with five wins that have shot the team to the top of the standings and placed them Number 8 in New Jersey this week.
Senior and future Penn State player Mya Bembry has continued to impress in scoring, assists, steals, and rebounds. A strong supporting team of starters, including Bianca Fede, Davionna Phillips, Ebony Odombarnes, Faith Lewis, Kaiija Jones, Kaya Schultz, MacKenzie Dover, and Natalie Nevins have helped to advance the Mountaineers. The newest addition to the starting lineup is freshman Kylie Capstraw, who helped the Girls Soccer team earn tournament and regional state titles this year. Capstraw is already looking to be a consistent top scorer and dominant force.
Following victories over East Orange (41-30), Arts (53-37), Payne Tech (65-23), Hudson Catholic (64-39), and Roselle Catholic (60-35), the Mountaineers have sent the message that they're here to play. The wins over Hudson Catholic and Roselle Catholic at the RC Holiday Tournament, two powerhouses in their own right, prove that the girls are up to the challenge of a tough season. Bembry was named MVP of the Roselle Catholic Tournament, and along with Kiley Capstraw (who scored 17 points) and Mackenzie Dover, were named to the All-Tournament team for West Orange.
The WOHS Girls Basketball team has a string of away games and will play their next home game against University on Jan. 10 beginning at 4 pm.
