West Orange High School Boys, Girls Soccer Advance to Semifinal Rounds of Essex County Tournament
WEST ORANGE, NJ – It was a big weekend for the West Orange Boys and Girls Soccer teams, as both took Essex County Tournament wins in the quarterfinal games on Oct. 20.
Top seed West Orange’s Nyah Harper scored two goals to put West Orange ahead of eighth-seed Millburn. Another goal by Kaya Schultz and two assists by Natalie Nevins helped shut out Millburn, 3-0.
“The girls played very well against a very good and very well-organized Millburn side,” said Head Coach Sean DeVore.
“We were able to score about 20 minutes in on a great goal by Kaya Schultz, which helped to set the tone for the game. We controlled the pace of the game and our team defended very well to earn a shutout.”
The girls head to the semifinal round on Oct. 24 against Livingston in an away game at Belleville beginning at 5:00 pm.
"The girls are very excited to play in the county semifinals against an excellent Livingston team," stated DeVore.
"West Orange has won the County tournament the past two years so we know that they are going to be a very good side. It should make for a great game," he noted.

"The win over East Side was a great team effort," began WOHS Boys Head Coach Doug Nevins.
“We had lost to East Side in overtime in our first game of the year. They’re very talented and well-coached. It took a real focus and high-level performance to pull it out in the end,” he continued.
The West Orange Boys Soccer team topped Newark East Side in double overtime, 2-1. Fifth-seed East Side scored their lone goal on a penalty kick by Dino Branco. Fourth-seed West Orange’s Brian Merlos scored the winning goal on an assist by James Fanfan. Yasin Aly scored right before halftime on another assist by Merlos to tie the game.
“If we play with this kind of intensity and togetherness against Montclair on Thursday, we have a chance to advance even further,” Nevins explained.
West Orange will face third seed Montclair in an away game on Oct. 25 beginning at 5:00 pm.
