Second Annual Broadway Night at West Orange High School Wows Crowd, Raises Money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
West Orange, NJ – The Second Annual Broadway Night at West Orange High School on Oct. 17 regaled the audience with a wide array of show and movie tunes while raising $1,800 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Glee Choir Director John Hellyer welcomed Michael Di Bianco from the organization, who stayed for the show and told the performers, “You can all really sing! You are the future of musical theater and it is wonderful to see your passion.”
“Knowing that the students were driven to put on a show that would benefit others is incredibly inspiring,” began Hellyer.
“This generation of young people that I am fortunate to work with truly understand the spirit of philanthropy and that gives me hope. Having Mr. DiBianco come to hear the concert and speak was an additional motivation. I am very grateful that the organization was represented and supportive of these talented students,” he continued.
“Putting on this concert just six weeks into the school year is a challenge,” Hellyer explained.
“Some of the students were assigned solos, duets, or trios. Some of them came to me with an idea for a song that could work in the concert, and it was truly a collaboration between all of us,” he noted.
Hellyer thanked the Music Booster parents for their support, along with Deb Coen and Lauren Grof-Tisza, who helped direct, organize, and handle sound and lighting. Grof-Tisza also performed “Come What May from “Moulin Rouge” with Hellyer.
“I was so proud of the members of the Glee Choir for their beautiful performances and for committing so early in the school year to putting on a full concert for the community. I love teaching all kinds of music, but music from the American musical theatre is a true passion,” noted Hellyer.
“We will be doing the concert again next year - I've already had students approach me with ideas for October 2019!” he concluded.
