Statement from The West Orange Administrators Association
Dear West Orange Families,
Our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the events that have unfolded in America over this past month. The tragic deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery exposed the unconscionable issue of systemic racism in America today. We recognize these are not isolated events, but rather a continuation of a long and troubled history of oppression. These times demand that we as school leaders redouble our commitment to ensuring an inclusive, loving and equitable environment for all of our students, staff and families.
We want you to know that the following beliefs are what guide our practices each day:
We believe …in all of our students and staff. We value and respect every individual, regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender expression, language, religion, ability or disability, economic background or culture.
We believe …in providing every student access to engaging and challenging academic learning experiences.
We believe…in supporting students to develop tolerance, empathy, and care for each other and the world in which they live.
We believe…that we must address the inequities we see in our school and community. We must address these inequities directly, compassionately and honestly.
Our response to the Covid virus taught us that we could respond as one people to “flatten the curve” of an insidious disease. We as a society must now find the same resolve to root out the insidious disease of racism.
We are proud of our schools and are humbled to serve the West Orange community.
To all our African American students and staff: you matter. Black Lives Matter. We see you, and we support you.
