WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange School District recognized the 33rd annual National Women and Girls in Sports Day during the Girls Basketball game on Feb. 7 as part of the movement's effort to empower women and girls to become more active, develop physical strength and challenge themselves in sports and in life.
According to the NGWSD, "the confidence, strength, and character gained through sports and physical activity are the very tools girls need to become strong leaders, in their own lives as well."
This year's theme is "Lead Her Forward," and t shirts were available for sale with the WOHS logo and the NGWSD theme printed on them.
Elementary school girl sports teams, rec teams, middle school athletes, and even a team from Verona were at the game to enjoy some halftime free throws and cameraderie.
The West Orange High School Girls Basketball team did not disappoint, beating Newark Central 57-27. On Feb. 8, they took a decisive 70-35 win over Irvington in the first round of the Essex County Tournament. The girls are currently 8-3 in conference division play and 15-3 overall, with their only losses this season to the top two teams, University and Newark Tech.
