Mt. Pleasant School Holds 15th Annual Flag Day Assembly
WEST ORANGE, NJ - Mt. Pleasant Elementary School was one of several West Orange Schools that recognized Flag Day on June 14, and they so in solemn fashion. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States Flag on June 17, 1777.
This was Mt. Pleasant's 15th Annual Flag Assembly, the first held in 2002 following the death of Frank Deming, Uncle of First Grade teacher Karyn Landis on Sept. 11, 2001. Deming perished along with 2,752 others at the World Trade Center.
According to Landis, "We started this assembly to teach our students about patriotism and to keep that patriotic spirit alive in our school , and continue it each year as a great tradition."
Mt. Pleasant greeted honored guests Staff Sergeant George Sergeant Turzani both from the East Orange Recruiting Center and Vietnam Veteran Dennis Linder. Turzani and Linder carried in the American Flag at the opening of the Assembly, speaking to students and singing patriotic songs.
