Across the country, teachers and other educators share the exciting challenge of teaching English, literacy skills, and academic content to a growing number of English language learners (ELLs). To this effect, the West Orange school district has implemented an ESL program designed to meet the needs of ELLs participating in our mainstream classes. The ESL program provides ELLs the opportunity to focus on, and make sense of, what they are experiencing in the outside world. The ultimate goal is to prepare students so that they may be academically successful and independent in the mainstream classroom and beyond.
The ESL curriculum is performance based. Classroom activities are student-centered, revolve around self and peer assessment, and encourage the development of higher order thinking skills. Students perform authentic tasks that represent academic and real-life situations. All five language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing) are integrated and developed holistically through thematic units based on content area themes and student interest.
Our ESL program assists the students in achieving social and cultural competence by integrating experiences and opportunities for the students to gain knowledge and insight into the customs, values, attitudes and diversity of culture in the United States. While becoming accustomed to life in the United States, the ESL program encourages students to maintain pride in their linguistic and cultural heritages.
Numerous factors outside of school contribute to the academic success of students who are learning English. Some of these factors are the student’s native language and culture, the length and quality of prior formal education in their native language, any previous education in the U.S., the length of time they have resided in the United States, and their amount of exposure to the English language. This is the type of information that will allow us to form a complete profile of each student. Knowing the whole child is imperative in order to provide him/her with the best possible education. The only way to gather this data is to form strong and trusting relationships with the home and community. The West Orange School District conducts quarterly ESL parents meetings with the aim of exchanging information that will ultimately benefit our students

A través del mundo entero, maestros y educadores comparten el gran reto de enseñar inglés, destrezas necesarias para tener éxito en la escuela, y conocimientos directamente relacionados a cada materia a un gran número de personas que están aprendiendo inglés (ELLs). Para alcanzar este objetivo el distrito escolar de West Orange implementa un programa de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) que ha sido diseñado para satisfacer las necesidades académicas de los ELLs en nuestras escuelas. El programa de ESL les da a estos estudiantes la oportunidad de entender y ser participe de lo que sucede en el mundo exterior (fuera de la escuela). Nuestra meta es preparar a estos estudiantes para que tengan éxito en la escuela y puedan formar parte de las clases regulares en inglés.
El currículo del departamento de ESL se basa en lo que el estudiante puede producir de acuerdo a su nivel académico y sus habilidades con el idioma. Las actividades del salón de clases se concentran en lo que hacen los estudiantes, en lo que pueden enseñarse el uno al otro, y se les anima a desarrollar la habilidad de pensar en una forma crítica y compleja. Los estudiantes trabajan en proyectos que simulan situaciones de la vida real. Las cinco habilidades envueltas en aprender un idioma (escuchar, hablar, leer, escribir, y observar) son integradas y se desarrollan en paralelo a través de unidades de estudio que relacionan los conocimientos necesarios para triunfar en el mundo académico temas de interés de acuerdo a la edad de los estudiantes.
Nuestro programa ayuda a los estudiantes a progresar social y culturalmente. Se les provee oportunidades y experiencias a través de las cuales el estudiante se familiariza con las costumbres, valores, y forma de pensar de una cultura tan diversa como la de los Estados Unidos. El programa de ESL anima a los estudiantes a mantener su patrimonio lingüístico y cultural, y al mismo tiempo aprender a formar parte de la sociedad americana.
Hay muchos factores que aun siendo externos a la escuela contribuyen de gran manera al éxito académico de los estudiantes que están aprendiendo ingles. Estos factores incluyen el primer idioma y cultura del estudiante, el tiempo que estuvo en la escuela y la calidad de la educación en su primer idioma, la educación que haya recibido y el tiempo que ha vivido en los EE.UU., y cuanto se ha relacionado con personas de habla inglesa. El conocer estos datos nos ayuda a conocer mejor a cada estudiante y así poder ofrecerles la mejor educación posible. La única forma de obtener esta información es formando buenas relaciones con el hogar y la comunidad. El distrito escolar de West Orange conduce reuniones con los padres de niños que están aprendiendo inglés varias veces al año. En estas reuniones se intercambia información con el propósito de beneficiar a los estudiantes.
